Meet Dr. Xiao Xiao
lemaster • Oct 16, 2015

Many of you know Dr. Xiao from the years she spent working in our office before pursuing her doctorate degree at Berkeley. Last spring she completed the doctorate program at Berkeley and we are pleased that she decided to rejoin our team.

“It was like coming home,” she says. “I know many of the staff and patients and they are like family to me.”

The other key factor she cites is that Dr. Lee practices at the leading edge of optometric medicine, so Dr. Xiao can continue to provide patients with the latest treatments to improve their health and vision. This allows her to continue advancing the knowledge and skills she acquired at Berkeley.

Dr. Xiao grew up in northeastern China and moved to the U.S. in 2001 because of the better educational opportunities. After receiving her Bachelor of Science in biology from Berkeley, she spent two years in our office as an optometric assistant, gaining experience in aspects of the optometric field, such as eyewear fashion, that are not part of a doctorate program. She then returned to Berkeley’s School of Optometry to complete her training. While there she received extensive experience in treating a wide range of ocular diseases at Berkeley’s clinic, as well as hospitals in Arizona and Washington. In addition to her optometric license, she is certified for the treatment of glaucoma.

Dr. Xiao always knew she wanted to be a doctor, but what caused her to specialize in optometry was her own experience with wearing contacts.

“It changed my life,” she says. “There was that ‘wow factor’ when I put on my first pair of contacts; I could see so clearly without my glasses. That inspired me to become an optometrist so I can make that same type of difference in other people’s lives.”

Not surprisingly, she specializes in fitting specialized contact lenses such as the SynergEyes lenses which combine the clarity of a rigid lens with the comfort of a soft contact. She also fits patients who need scleral contact lenses: large custom-made lenses which rest comfortably against the white part of the eye, instead of the cornea, and allow people with dry eyes or irregularly shaped corneas to see more clearly.

We are quite pleased to have Dr. Xiao back in our office. And from what we’ve heard, so are our patients, such as the emergency patient who credits her with helping save his vision. He came in just before closing and Dr. Xiao noticed that his retina was becoming detached. She worked late locating and lining up a retinal specialist who could get him into surgery that same night, so there was no permanent vision loss. She also works with patients who have high blood pressure or diabetes to help them live healthier lifestyles.

“We want all our patients to be healthy,” she says. “I will talk to my patients to make sure they eat healthy and exercise to maintain the overall health of the body. The eyes are a part of the body and if they don’t take care of the rest of the body it will affect their eyes.”
