Many people suffer from allergies that leave them a sneezing, sniffling mess when their allergens come out in force. However, in addition to or instead of all that, some “lucky” people suffer from itchy, watery, red and swollen eyes. These symptoms are called eye allergies, or allergic conjunctivitis.
Eye allergies are caused by the same biological mechanisms that are responsible for other types of allergies, whether it’s nasal symptoms or serious symptoms like anaphylactic shock. Allergies occur when the immune system misfires and goes into overdrive, treating harmless or only minimally harmful substances as dire threats to the body.
